Your Battery Is Lying to You. Here's How to Tell.

That battery meter looks fine until it suddenly doesn't. Here's what really determines battery life.

The Battery Lie

The meter shows 50% capacity. That means you have half your runtime left, right? Wrong. By the time your meter shows 50%, you might have 10% actual capacity left.

Battery meters are estimates. They've always been estimates. The real battery management is about habits, not meters.

What Actually Kills Batteries

1

Deep Discharge

Letting batteries run until they die completely. This is the number one killer of lead-acid batteries.

The 50% Rule

Charge when you hit 50%. Not when you hit 20%. Not when the machine slows down. When the meter shows 50%.

Why 50%

Deep discharging a lead-acid battery once can cut its life by months. Do it regularly and you're replacing batteries every year instead of every three years.

2

Missing Water

Flooded lead-acid batteries need water. Running dry ruins them fast.

Check Monthly

Pull the caps. Look inside. Plates should be covered by water. If they're exposed, add distilled water.

Only Distilled Water

Tap water has minerals that build up and kill batteries. Always use distilled.

3

Heat and Vibration

Batteries hate both. This is why proper storage and mounting matter.

Storage

Don't leave machines in hot storage units. Batteries self-discharge faster and can be permanently damaged.

Loose Mounting

Vibration kills batteries mechanically. Make sure your battery mounts are tight and have appropriate insulation.

4

The Lithium Difference

Newer machines might have lithium batteries. They're different.

The Good News

No water. No memory effect. Longer life. More cycles. Better overall.

The Catch

More expensive upfront. Need the right charger. When they do fail, it's usually sudden. But they last longer overall.

Batteries Are the Biggest Ongoing Cost

A few good habits can double battery life. That's not a small thing when batteries cost hundreds to replace.
